History of Sparkman's Dairy & Sparkman's Cream Valley

In 1967 Ross Sparkman purchased a small dairy in Colquitt County and Sparkman's Dairy was born. From the beginning, the new dairyman operated by the philosophy he and his family were "stewards of the land," following environmentally sound waste management and soil conservation practices. Committed to quality, Ross believed in treating his all-jersey cows with care, not using artificial hormones and in producing the finest dairy products possible.

The same core values are in force today as son Ricky Sparkman and his three sons Matthew, Ryan and Dustin begin a new phase in the life of the dairy with Sparkman's Cream Valley. Beginning in 2007, Sparkman's now offers a line of custom, high-quality dairy products in a new production facility right on the farm, using milk from their own cows.

Sparkman's plans to continue their "quality first" practice by purchasing local strawberries, blueberries, pecans and other local ingredients for their ice cream flavors.

Taste is what it is all about – and taste is a significant difference in the Sparkman Cream Valley dairy products. In fact, some folks have called the taste of our dairy products "heavenly." We appreciate the compliment! To answer those who wonder how we do it...well, here's our secret: we still maintain artificial hormone free, all-jersey cows so the initial dairy product is of the highest quality – resulting in superior tasting milk, buttermilk, yogurt, butter and ice cream. That's it. Nothing fancy...just outrageously delicious dairy products that will leave you asking for more.

Sparkman’s Cream Valley FAQ

1. What does Sparkman’s mean when they say hormone free - antibiotic free?
Sparkman’s is very passionate about the well being of our animals; therefore, we choose not to inject artificial hormones into the cows to increase the rate of growth and productivity. Artificial hormone free means that we don’t inject our cattle with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rbgh) or recombinant bovine somatotrophin (rbst). We also choose not to use artificial reproductive hormones in our lactating animals. Our label speaks the truth – no artificial hormones are used in the production of our milk.

With regard to antibiotics, our milk is highly regulated by the government for any antibiotic residue. Samples from each tank of milk are tested in our on-site, state-approved laboratory and data is recorded for state inspection. If milk tests positive for antibiotics, it is immediately disposed of at the farm. We also take extra precautions to make sure contaminants are not present in our milk; therefore, any Sparkman’s cow that becomes ill is removed from the herd, put on prescribed therapy treatment and kept in isolation until they have fully recovered.

2. What are the Sparkman’s cows fed? How does this make Sparkman’s products “natural”?
We feed our cows a carefully selected diet of grass hybrids and corn. These hybrids are chosen from many years of university studies and field trials. The diet is high in digestibility and nutritional value and are harvested at optimum times in order to preserve the nutritional value throughout the year. We have a licensed nutritionist on staff to advise us in the formulation of feed ingredients to optimize milk production and cow health. None of our grains contain animal by-products or additives, which allows us to be considered all natural.

3. How does Sparkman’s set themselves apart from others in the industry?
Sparkman’s Cream Valley has achieved the Gold Standard Dairy status, which recognizes our dedication to producing the highest quality of milk in the industry. Also, we are currently the only dairy in the state of Georgia approved for a 21-day shelf life for fresh milk. For most consumers, that’s another week in the refrigerator!

We do not use the ultra pasteurization methods that organics processors use because we feel this method can alter the unique flavor of our outrageously delicious milk. There is no secret to the flavor of our milk; it only comes from our all jersey herd of cows. The “heavenly” taste, as described by our consumers, is the higher solids not fat content found in all jersey milk.

4. Does the Milk from Sparkman's Cream Valley have Vitamin D in it? It does not have vitamin D
