Pebble Hill Grove -- Quitman, GA

Frank and Teresa Bibin own a 27-acre organic pecan orchard in South Georgia. Georgia is the main pecan producing state in the U.S.A. Conventional pecans are heavily treated with pesticides; most orchards spray six times per year.

But Frank and Teresa were determined to grow pecans without chemicals that harm the environment. This was a huge challenge, given the variety of insects that feed on pecans. In the mid-1990’s the Bibins were losing over 30% of their crop to the hickory shuckworm, the most common pest in pecan orchards. By chance, they decided to try attracting bats to the orchard as a means of pest control.

Since that time, the Bibins have created a refuge for over 1,700 bats—many of which are endangered in Georgia. The bat colony protects Pebble Hill Grove’s pecans by consuming as much as 22 pounds of insects in a single night. Using their bat colony, the Bibins also conduct pest control research on other crops, advancing organic agriculture and wildlife conservation in Georgia. Pebble Hill Grove provides delicious organic pecans---and a real resource for sustainable agriculture.

In 1992, he went full time, farming peppers. Over the years, diversification has played a key role in the success of C&B Farms. Obern produces 36 different vegetables and herbs—arrugula, bok choy, Chinese mustard, daikon, winter melons, basil, mint, chives, hot peppers, specialty eggplants and many other unusual vegetables. NEVA Hydroponic Farms -- Bowersville, GA

Neva Hydroponic Farms uses hydroponics to grow basil, watercress, and arugula.  Hydroponcs is a "green" technique used to grow plants and herbs without soil. Hydroponic plants are grown in water (soil-free gardens) and have the ideal balance of nutrients and water delivered directly to their roots. Because the roots are not forced to expend energy searching for water and food, they grow up to 10X faster, larger, and healthier; delivering the consumer the highest levels of vitamins, nutrients, flavor, color, and yield possible.

Berry Farms -- Vidalia, GA

Berry Farms is a bio-intensive organic farm located just outside of Vidalia, Ga. It is owned and operated by Jason and his wife Stacy Berry. Jason is a 4th generation Georgia Farmer(on both sides) and has been certified organic since 2007. We initially became interested in reducing pesticide and fertilizer usage on our conventional vegetable farm and now solely concentrate on organic growing with specific emphasis on managing soil microbiology. Our philosophy has been to build a diverse ecosystem and a balanced soil food web. We believe this is a truly sustainable method of farming and produces higher quality and better tasting food. We have 5 children and it feels good to feed them with such healthy fruit and vegetables.

Ashrey Farms - Bainbridge, GA

Ashrey Farms was founded in 2007 in Decatur County in beautiful Southwest Georgia. Ashrey is a Hebrew word meaning blessed. The 24-acre organic blueberry farm is located on a 1600-acre nature preserve, which is managed intensely for native plants, game and timber. Both partners, Mike Grimsley and Wesley Popiel, discovered that they have a passion for organic farming. With Mike’s business background and Wes’s crop science background, their talents complimented each other well, and they decided to start this exciting venture.
Mike is originally from Bainbridge, GA where Ashrey Farms is located. He graduated from the University of Georgia and co-owns a development company based in Atlanta, GA. Wesley moved to the area 11 years ago from Athens, GA. He also graduated from UGA with a crop science degree. He currently owns and operates a wildlife management company.
Ashrey Farms includes several varieties of blueberries. There is 3 acres of early highbush ripening from mid-April to mid-May. Three varieties of rabbiteye bushes make up the remaining 21-acres and ripen from mid-May to late June. This spring/summer is the blueberries’ third growing season. A 2000 square foot packing shed was constructed this spring and allows the blueberries to be packed and refrigerated on-site.
Ashrey Farms has produced beautiful blueberries this year and will continue to grow with additional organic produce planned for the future.

Rainbow Heritage Farm - Lexington, GA

Rainbow Heritage Farm is a new farm located in Lexington, Ga. Mia and Patrice Camoston are the owners. Mia Camoston, a Georgia native, was born into a family of farmers, chefs, and teachers. Her dream to have a small farm in the middle of a small town has finally come true. As we discover all that this little farm can do we hope that you will grow with us on this culinary journey underneath the rainbow, here at Rainbow Heritage Farm.
Patrice Camoston was born and raised in Massachusetts. She spent her childhood in Boston, living in what she calls the concrete jungle. The houses were separated by either driveways or alleyways. There was very little grass and very few trees. She dreamed of a life in the country surrounded by land, trees, and grass instead of neighbors. My dream finally came true when she made a trip to Georgia with Mia and came to Oglethorpe County for the first time in 2003. They decided to move to Georgia in 2006 saw the possibilities for a farm and moved to Lexington in that same year. Rainbow Heritage Farm is the result.

Bowersville Family Produce - Bowersville, GA

Bowersville Family Produce is packing sustainably grown and Certified Naturally Grown grape tomatoes for the 2010 season.
We are a family farm incubator which started with a successful 10-acre trial in 2009. We began out of concern for the state of Southern agriculture, particularly the demise of the family-scale farm and the disappearance of food production from much of Northeast Georgia. We are reaching out to the growing number of families who are interested in farming and are helping them start profitable ventures.
Our 2010 growers include seven new family farms and one existing farm, growing a total of 21 acres of grape tomatoes in Hart, Franklin, and Oglethorpe counties. These growers are keeping their scale small and sustainable, ensuring you receive carefully-grown fruit. We built a packing facility in Bowersville to enable our growers and other small farms to reach the major markets.

Byne Blueberry Farms - Waynesboro,GA

Byne Blueberry Farms has been family owned and operated since 1980. In fact, it was the very first Commercial Blueberry Operation in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). Despite all this, experience and know how is not what sells our berries. It’s the berries themselves…
Our berries are 100% organic (just the way nature intended). The 20 acre patch off Burke County’s Story Mill Road is the perfect spot for growing the Byne’s signature Rabbiteye Blueberries. This special breed of berries (which has a higher fructose level) has become a local favorite because of its naturally sweet taste. Byne Blueberry Farms won the first Flavor of Georgia Contest for 2007- in the jams, jellies and sauces category.

Georgia's Finest Organic Farms - Wavery Hall, GA

Friends since preschool, Chris French and Ira Meyers were both born and raised in Columbus, Georgia. Over the years, both men followed many career paths, never dreaming that one day, they would own a
farm.  In 2008, the economic meltdown forced changes in many industries and both men found themselves
at a turning point. They wanted to embark on an honest, credible business that would benefit their families, the community and society at large. Ira and Chris liked the idea of working together as friends. The future of organic farming appealed to them on many levels, as a way of taking care of the land, producing
something of value and doing good work.  Chris French and Ira Meyers are happy to return to their roots—in horticulture, business, entrepreneurship and management. They plan to cultivate all 30 acres of the farm intensively, growing fruits and vegetables to sell through a variety of channels within the region. Along with a commitment to stewardship, quality is the number one goal at Georgia’s Finest Organic Farms.

Mama J's Produce - Cartersville, GA

Mama J’s Produce is a hydroponic greenhouse growing local, pesticide free lettuce and herbs. Started in 2009 in Cartersville, Georgia, Mama J’s is owned and operated by a mother and son team, Carol and John Jerauld. Concerns about the safety of the food her family was eating sparked Carol’s interest in locally grown, pesticide free produce. John is challenged by the technological aspect of growing healthy food and preserving the environment in the process. By combining these interests, Carol and John have started what can truly be called a “locally grown family farm”.
